In my opinion, Huyssen's dissection of the shift from modernism to postmodernism has been the most coherent and rational of all our previous readings. In contrast to other authors, Huyssen dealt with vague terms such as avantgarde and postmodernism head on. He delved deep into how these concepts have shaped our world today. Huyssen's explanation of why the avante-garde can no longer function could easily be the fate of postmodernism. He writes "Ironically, technology helped initiate the avantgarde artwork and its radical break with tradition, but then deprived the avantgarde of its necessary living space in everday life." By integrating itself into the technological, market world, the concept of avantgarde is diminished. Whatever political or radical statements the art may have exhibited is lost in the commodification. Avantgarde can not exist in the postmodern world. Jameson's earlier piece fully supports this claim. The avantgarde became too obsessed with what it was trying to rebel against and ulitmately became its own enemy. With all the contradictions that seem to define postmodernism, I wonder if this could be in postmodernism's future as well?
