So I have always been very interested in art and design, but it hasn't been until fairly recently that I've started thinking about what that means for something to be a really good design, both aesthetically and functionally (also, I highly recommend everyone read Cradle to Cradle by William McDonough & Michael Braungart, a book about "remaking the way we make things" ).

the text/machine, the existence of the text itself?
I suppose I should have written this post for last class, but since I'm a horrible horrible person and didn't I'm just going to use this space to clarify my understanding of Aarseth's "text machine," the idea that intrigued me most in his book Cybertext. From what I gathered, Aarseth's grievances and main points seem to be as follows:
- the technique of "theoretical imperialism" might be a good starting point, but we shouldn't be so quick to assume it correctly analyzes all forms of new media
project
To begin, I’m definitely doing the creative project, since, how cool will it be to actually be a “published†hypertext author? Granted we fit into the “amateur†category that exists despite the internet being a reasonably democratic medium, now we can coolly demonstrate to all our friends who probably don’t know that hypertext is that yeah, this is what we do in Writing Machines.
wiki worries
hello fellow internet personalities,
i'm thinking we need to rework the wiki. TimberOfFennario--you're going to use your content for your personal project, right? considering our wiki right now is made up of mostly TOF's contributions, it won't be much of a hassle to start over. shall we just start randomly and see where it goes (because the direction it's going right now isn't exactly random, it's the result of a good plan)? thoughts?

frequently asked questions about hypertext
As I was gone on Friday, I did some poking around on the electronic literature collection myself and found Frequently Asked Questions About Hypertext. The work parodies the form of an FAQ website with the purpose of informing its user about different aspects of hypertext.

democratization of technology
Those of you who happened to catch the business section of the NYTimes this morning might have seen this article on the new "Cubic" phone that's being marketed as "the first global mobile phone."
Although in theory you can make calls from your AT&T or T-Mobile phone using the same kind of international network, the ra

So earlier I was reading a book called Good City Form for one of my other classes, and, although its author Kevin Lynch was not referring to media forms when he wrote it, I was struck in particular by one of his observations: "There is an inherent tension as well as a circularity between continuity and development--between the stabilities and connections needed for coherence and the ability to change and grow."
even fools like new technology!
Hokay, so: I was just in the middle of posting a comment to gnugnu's last entry, but my internet decided to do what internet does best and mysteriously refreshed itself, thus deleting my comment. So I decided to post it as a blog entry instead, because it does in fact relate to the reading.
