Choose Your Own Adventure!

I used to read those books when I was (not that much) younger. I'm now really interested in the possibilities the internet allows for that kind of story.

I was disappointed to find out that the original Choose Your Own Adventure franchise has not taken enough advantage of the internet as a platform. They do have a website, but you can't access any content there, only order print copies. You can also get to secret online endings, but as far as I can tell, they all end with some lame sort of matching game: a last gap at adapting before going the way of the dodo.

I did find a few other websites that fully adapted the "choose your own adventure" model to the internet, with a great twist: when you get to the last entry in a storyline, you can create the next one. I'm sure there are many projects like this, but I'll just mention two here.

The first is "Gav and Peloso's Interactive Story". I haven't gotten very far in it, but it seems interesting and well-written. Most of the people who create entries have an institutional address. One tidbit I noticed is that all but one of the entries I read were gender-neutral, except for this one. If authors don't collaborate with each other on issues like this, the story could get a little odd.

The second "choose your own adventure" I found is much less sophisticated, but still interesting in its own way. A lot of words are misspelled or shortened (think "u" for "you"), and the humor is pretty fucked up (that's your sister, by the way). This entry I found fascinating, because it makes no sense in the context of a linear narrative, but you glean a lot from it, maybe more than you'd be able to if it did make sense. Obviously, there used to be some entry that involved crabs (the mystery!), and someone then wrote over that entry. After that, someone wrote over the new entry to say that the first one (with the crabs) was better than the second one, about which we know nothing. I think that's cool.

Anyway, that's all for now. If you find any good interactive adventures, please send them my way!
