Urban Dictionary

Taking social software thinking out of the academic and into the fun, what do people think about Urban Dictionary? With all this talk about how Wikipedia can be a helpful research tool and an innovative way to incorporate lots of different authors, Urban Dictionary seems like its bastard cousin. Though it claims to be a dictionary of common slang (and it definitely has that), the site has also turned into a warehouse for high schoolers (and younger kids) to post entries about their specific high schools, or even trash specific people (which is really pretty awful).

So Urban Dictionary is quite different from Myspace, Facebook, and certainly online dictionaries in that it allows tiny worlds to be defined. But the definitions are not contingent on a particular person. In a way, our Facebook pages give people an idea of our personalities, our college, and sometimes our hometowns. But it isn’t a forum for actually setting out definitions that can then be voted upon.

Urban Dictionary contains offensive, mean-spirited, and ridiculous entries for words that I doubt anyone uses outside an exclusive group of maybe five people. I know this for sure because my friends and I posted the word “nuvo” two years ago, with a completely made-up definition (though one we use to this day), and now NINETEEN people have voted for it. Which leaves me to wonder if:
A) we started using a word that other people with no knowledge of us use as well
B) my definition was so convincing that people actually believed it was a word
C) people randomly surf the site and vote for definitions...which seems kind of dumb

So…it’s definitely fun. And I think it might have more power in spreading new words then we think.

P.S. you should look up your high school on the site, I bet it’s there, and the entries for high schools are…exciting and often use colorful language

It's funny how my friends

It's funny how my friends and I have definitely used Urban Dictionary to look up words we want to know. Even today, my friend said she had a conversation with someone and they couldn't figure out what way to position your hands when you are describing something as "awkward turtle" (if you've never used "awkward turtle" before, I apologize because that previous sentence probably made no sense). They found the "answer" on Urban Dictionary, and I didn't think twice about both her and my acceptance of its definition until I read your post. I mean, I don't automatically assume everything on Urban Dictionary is factual, but your post definitely made me reconsider how quick I am to accept what these social software sites say is true.

On another note, you inspired me to look up my high school in Urban Dictionary. I couldn't find it, so I looked up my name instead. Man, are there some crazy definitions. They ranged from "Someone who's awesome. Loved by many. And likes to talk about drugs for fun." (I have to admit, that put a smile on my face) to "A girl who loves animals. She is partially religious and would rather follow the crowd, but also likes to be different. People call her weird, but she doesn't let on that it bothers her. An angel. Adults love her. She has many friends, but doesn't notice. People love her for her "weirdness," but some do not understand." Hmmm. I was thrilled to find a post that was my first name along with the first letter of my last name until I read what it said: "a very ugly person so ugly she was declared a natural disaster. she so ugly when her mom droped her off for school she was arrested for littering." It's kind of pathetic that that definition made me sad for a minute. Why are my emotions sometimes tied to social software sites that I know aren't posting "the truth"?

This is fun: Apparently my

This is fun:
Apparently my name is the "#699 most common male name"

I have no idea if it's true, but it's still fun;)

And here's to me having (before ten minutes ago) no idea that that gesture was called the awkward turtle ...!

I don't know--maybe Urban Dictionary is more "reliable" for certain subjects rather than others. As in, the definition of awkward turtles but not the frequency of first names. There are certain things that wouldn't make the encyclopedia--even wikipedia--which (I imagine) UD would cover.

It's also handy that you can "rate" the accuracy of their definitions. It's not quite peer editing, but if no one agrees with the definition, it's probably not true.

Ha! I just reread my own

Ha! I just reread my own post and realized I wrote "I have to admit, that put a smile on my face" after the sentence that my name (according to Urban Dictionary) describes someone who "likes to talk about drugs for fun". Oops! I meant I smiled when I saw that my name describes "someone who's awesome." Though I guess the drug things is so random that it's funny too...

Hmm, maybe I can't post things at 2 in the morning that make sense.
