Control and the Final Project

Over the semester, we have discussed how writing differs according to the forum in which it is done. For example, recent posts have discussed how hypertexts offer disjointed, non-linear readings. Recently, I talked to a class member about the casual nature of blogs and the difficulty in making them conform to a structured, more formal style (for, say, the final critical project, if that's what you're doing).

I'm working on a critical project that is a hypertext and I'm definitely finding that the form is guiding the style and even content of my paper. I don't know how others are going about their final critical project (if they're doing one), but I started out thinking that I could pretty much write the 15-20 page paper and then worry about forcing it into an online structure that
"contributes to the meaning."

I quickly found out that this wasn't going to work. On the hypertext, everything is much more fragmented and I worry about it's lack of cohesiveness. Also, I have quickly found that the casual, carefree style of blog writing has carried over into my project. Is this right? Is it contributing to the meaning of my project? I'm not sure, but I do know that it's hard to control. Writing things into little frames on dreamweaver makes my writing more choppy and all over the place which makes me a little nervous. So far, I'm going with it to see where it leads me. Hopefully, there won't need to be a fourth quarter overhaul...

I've had the same process

I've had the same process and feelings with my final project; I, too, thought I could write a typical, "academic" analysis paper, then force it into an online structure. So, for stage 2, I outlined my research in a typical outline, only to hear from people in my small discussion group that I didn't have to follow such a structured format because, after all, I should think about how it fits my online medium. When I started thinking about this, it blew my mind. Suddenly, this "paper" seemed much more fun to me, because I could play with the form and what I would and wouldn't include. Basically, I could redefine what an "academic" paper is, and that's exciting.

Nevertheless, I still struggle with being too carefree (as you put it), and I'm worried that my overall project will be too choppy. I'm still not quite sure how to organize everything. So my answer would be yes, it is right to have a more casual style, especially if it fits your particular online form. But I would appreciate other people's thoughts/opinions!
