the end of the wiki

Yesterday, I heard murmurs about the end of the wiki project. I was wondering myself if anyone would be brave enough to end the story. I’m not sure what an appropriate end would be, outside of something like the world being destroyed and all the main characters being killed, which would be a major cop-out. Beyond that, the threads seem too distinct for someone to try to bring everything together in a single post, but maybe I’m wrong and someone will be clever and attempt to do so.

In terms of general reflection on the wiki, I thought it was kind of cool. It turned out better than I thought it would. Obviously the degree of investment one would have in such a large collaborative piece of fiction is limited. I definitely felt that way myself. But I think a lot of the entries are pretty interesting/cool/funny.

Also this wiki would definitely not have been possible in another format. The linking structure first comes to mind. I’m more appreciative of the way that someone can link to a single word in a lengthy post about a character and create a whole other arc without disrupting the flow of the original post. That sort of flexibility isn’t possible if you were to write it down on paper or tell a story out loud. While the total story doesn’t add up to anything groundbreaking, it definitely functioned as a learning tool for me. Which I guess was the point.

Wiki

How could we/can we end it?

I also thought the wiki has

I also thought the wiki has been going pretty well. I started out very hesitant in the beginning, and I felt like the wiki was going all over the place. I didn't imagine it would turn out as well as it has, and I'm pretty impressed by everyone's work too.

I also agree with you that although the story isn't groundbreaking at all, it's definitely been a good learning tool for all of us, well, especially for the majority of us who've never worked on this type of collaborative project. It really is essential that everyone participates in this kind of work because otherwise, it's very difficult to further the story. As I'm finishing the writing of my own hypertext final project, I sometimes wish that it were a collaborative project because sometimes it gets stressful and tiring having to write out an entire text oneself.

As for the ending of our wiki, I've been thinking about that, and actually I think we could probably end with some type of closure between the characters, either with somebody moving away or a resolution/agreement between antagonistic parties. I think a lot of action has already occurred with Rob/Alice/Grant/Patty/Godfrey/etc. and we can--that is, if we wanted to--head towards a denouement.

Then again, we could just leave it open for editing because that's the point of a wiki, and we'd be respecting the form of the wiki and not stamping or forcing linearity--and with that linearity, an ending--to it. Plus, real life doesn't have the same type of closure that traditional books are supposed to have, so if we saw the wiki as such, then we could/should definitely leave it open, just like in life.

Perhaps, as we are finding or not finding an ending for the wiki, people could start talking more about the wiki on the blog, since it's easier to see posts and entries on here, and it's not as hidden as it is on the wiki?

wiki

First, off, yes to lulu on posting about the wiki on the blog instead of the discussion site (since that site has seemed pretty dead for a long time now). As for finding resolution, I am torn. While I agree that the whole point of the wiki is to let it organically grow. Perhaps, we can give it another week and see what we come up with. I personally don't think that we need to tie up all the loose ends neatly yet I think it could use some sort of semi-resolution. Anyway, we'll see how it goes...

end of wiki

I, too, have wondered what will happen with the end of the wiki. I've had urges to put something along the lines of "Then, suddenly, the internet came back on. And, in the minds of the students, all was right in the world again." Though now when I think about it, Lulu's idea of somehow bringing some closure would be good. Or even just mentioning some of the main characters from the side-stories on the main page would work well. I know it will be hard to bring full closure, since there are many side-stories, and I personally feel weird "ending" a side-story that I haven't written much of before. I guess if some people just go for it and others can edit, that will work. Or we can post more ideas on the blog.

It's so weird that the wiki will come to an end...though maybe it doesn't have to, since we don't have to end our participation in it when the class does.
