study break

More in the study break category, has anyone heard of this: inanimate alice?

It’s a cool interactive fiction with sound, games (sort of, you have to check it out and read the about section), and pictures. It’s won a lot of awards in Europe and seems to be getting a lot of buzz. There is a separate author and multimedia expert (too bad I didn’t have one of those for my own project), so both sides are pretty well done. The whole thing seems just perfect for our class, the subject is a girl who we watch grow up (only the first two episodes are available) and become a game designer. The site claims it is a “study of human/computer relations in a world where having friends means never having to meet them.” Or if you don’t want to think too much, just listen to the music which is disturbing.

Wow! That's really cool--"a combination of images, text, and sound". It's sort of something I'd hoped we'd see in the course of the class--it seems such a natural use of computer tech!--and that a couple projects (Nightowl's in particular) were sort of hinting at. Very neat!

And I know what you mean--I'd love to have had a multimedia expert ;)

You're right about the music.

What kind of awards are there in Europe for multimedia things?

best i've seen

that's the best I've seen so far this semester, as far as combining music, video, pictures, and text into a whole new art form. I do wish it was a little more serious. Strange how the medium seems to be used for stories with an educational motive.

Alice

Hi commenters,

thanks for checking out Alice, and your kind words... much appreciated!

To answer your question about European awards - there are very very few. I can think of maybe 4 decent ones. We got very lucky with episode 1... this was the first year that the Italian prize we got has been offered.

Our aim definitely wasn't educational... it's very interesting that you saw an educational angle there though. We've had discussions with various people about how it might be extended into more clearly educational areas, and that is still a possibility. So if you have any good ideas, please feel free to send them over, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

thanks,
