On the project tip

I have a question for you. I have already submitted my Senior Project proposal, but since I haven't really done anything other than broadly outline it and contact a few people that would be in it, nothing is concrete as of yet. I was wondering what you thought about the three possiblities that keep me awake at night.

1- Capturing DJ culture in LA. Here, I would interview DJs that occupy different realms of the art/business. I would talk to radio djs, turntablist djs, and club djs and see what similarities and differences exist between them.

2- An indepth portrait of Egon. He is the manager of the biggest independent hiphop label in the world - Stones Throw. Not only is he an amazing DJ, but he takes great photographs, and writes for a hiphop magazine. I assume he'll be busy, but it would be cool to get a glimpse of his life.

3- A memorial piece for J.Dilla. You know how he is, even though you think you don't. He produced a bulk of A Tribe Called Quest's, Busta Rhymes, D'Angelo's, and countless other hiphop/neo-soul groups music. Its sad that such a legend is relatively unknown, and since he passed away last year he obviously wont be releasing any new music. I would talk to DJs, Producers, and MCs from the LA area and see exactly what influence he had on his peers. I feel like some sort of documentation of his greatness is neccessary.

I would appreciate it if I could get some opinions. Thanks.

I vote #3

You have three really interesting ideas. I'm most interested in number three, probably because it seems the most focused. Or maybe because I really enjoy memorial pieces (is that depressing?). I wish I had some sort of film/digital know-how so that I could have done a project, papers have just become so dull.

a vote for #1

i like #1 -- you'd get to meet a lot of cool people around LA, and it seems like it would turn into a really dynamic project. it might need a little more focus though, like an argument you're trying to make or a specific part of DJ culture you're analyzing, etc.

seems like Egon & a bunch of

seems like Egon & a bunch of J.Dilla's peers are all in LA, so could you combine all three, framing it as an exploration of the influences on/development of the LA DJ culture, featuring tracks on Egon & J.Dilla?
