Actually enjoyable homework
So, for the first time in a while I actually found an assigned reading (maybe with the exception of parts of House of Leaves) completely interesting and engaging. The book was informative and concise, yet interesting and informative. Although I never really read comic books, with the exception of an occasional Archie and Jughead, I thought that this was the best way possible for McCloud to bring attention to the topic and discuss it in a scholarly way. I've never read anything else academic on comic books, but I can imagine that reading about the history of comic books and the methods it uses would have been much less interesting in a typical novel or article format.
I also think this novel was great because, I personally am a visual learner. If I see pictures or images of something while it is being introduced to me, I am much more likely to digest the ideas and concepts. I think this is the main reason that I loved this assignment. Also, it felt like I was having a personal conversation with McCloud, rather than reading a book. I really liked the images of him speaking and it made me feel much more connected to the text.
In regards to authorship, I think McCloud really wanted people of all academic levels to be able to read and enjoy this work. It is clear that potential comic book readers may want to read this piece and despite age and level of education, McCloud wanted them to be able to understand what he was saying and enjoy it. I thought it was great.
