Stop Motion Video and "UH OH!"

So, after finals, and after spending like 22810384029 hours on YouTube, I decided that I was going to teach myself how to make stop motion videos over winter break. Don’t ask me why, I’ve always been impressed by them, and claymation has always held a special place in my heart. I know there are some film/photography/art people in the class, and if anyone has done any stop motion work and wants to share some words of wisdom (or cool videos) let me know. Here are a few of my favorites so far:

Amputation
Dialogue Exercise
We Are Lions!
And, for those of you who are still wondering about the “What is art” question, I present this: Suppose You Say...

In any case, I woke up this morning, and took out my camera, and then DROPPED IT ON THE FLOOR. The zoom is broken, it won’t go back inside the camera, and after some forcing, it goes back in part way, but not without making a nasty rattling sound. Naturally, my picture-taking abilities are gone. So, I’ll just have to postpone this project. GREAT. Side note: Geek Squad is pretty awesome.
Me: Hi, I dropped my camera, and now the zoom-thingie won’t go back inside the camera. You know the thing that pokes out? It’s bent.
Geek: UH-OH! Eeee, that’s bad.
Me: I know.
Geek: Don’t tell me you broke it, pretend it broke on its own, that way they’ll fix it for you.
Me: How am I supposed to pretend it broke on its own? It’s bent.
Geek: Just say, you took it out of the case, and it was like that.

Stop Motion

Hey there, it's not clay, but it's still stop motion:

I posted it yesterday, but it got buried pretty quickly as people have been catching up. It's done by a friend of a friend from Occidental. Let me know what you think.

stopan

I haven't seen SAW but I do like teddy bears. That's real decent stopAn--but I'm sure you've seen the SE7EN version of this? I feel like the SE7EN one probably came first, and it's quite good.

aww, poor teddy

That's awesome! And it must have taken an INSANE amount of time to complete. I'm impressed at your friend's ability to manipulate stuffed animals like that. I tried making a video just now with a friends camera, and I thought it was a pretty decent first attempt until I watched this video and realized I have a LONG way to go.

awesomeness!

man! those youtube clips are hilarious! the "what is art" one is really funny--a farcical take on a sometimes overly discussed, overly serious topic. sorta like the whole death of the author idea. you should make your stop-motion about the death of the author. it could be pretty cool, even sort of like the first "amputation" clip you posted. just say the amputation dude is the author, and the saw thing is postmodernism. you could do another character that the saw can't cut through, made of steel or something, and he can be foucault, an "initiative of discursive practices" (Foucault 131). that'd be pretty great. foucault is kind of full of himself, from the tone of that article.

you know, i miss making funny, parodic artistic pieces about theoretical concepts. i did that in high school. i'm gonna write a blog on that right now.

good luck with the stop-motion whenever you can pursue it, and i'm sorry about your camera!
