For tomorrow's seminar

|

For tomorrow's discussion, the presenting group (Caitlin, Cristina and myself) is bringing wine and cheese/crackers for everyone to munch on. There will also be a non-alcoholic option for people who don't wish to drink our cheap wine. Anyway, point being... everyone should try to remember to bring $2 or $3 to help pay for it, please!! I promise some wine and munchies will enhance everyone's experience, although our presentation will also be intriguing and wonderful.

Ok, thanks... see you tomorrow night and enjoy finishing Hamlet on the Holodeck (especially Section 4!)

"The Federal Communications Commission is once again taking up the issue of media ownership and deciding how media ownership rules should be changed. As FCC Commissioner Michael Copps has warned: 'They screwed it up once. Believe me, they're 100 percent capable of screwing it up again.' That's why it's crucial for the public to weigh in now. Here's what's at stake:

rally today

OK, so this isn't really media related... but BEN HARPER will be there performing and it's a really good cause if anyone can make it. There are free buses there and back.

TODAY AT 4:30 PM THERE WILL BE A RALLY FOR IMMIGRANT WORKERS' RIGHTS. HERE IS A BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE EVENT. We're meeting at 10th and Columbia in front of Scripps Admission at 2:30. Please bring yourself and whoever else is willing to rally for this cause!

Join us on September 28th as immigrant workers begin a new stage of the immigrant rights movement by demanding that the hotels along Century Corridor provide good jobs that pay living wages and allow immigrant workers to rise out of poverty. Our march on Century Blvd. will culminate in hundreds of immigrants, workers, community members, clergy, students and other activists protesting in one of the largest acts of non-violent civil disobedience in the history of Los Angeles.

Don't forget the Fall Fete!

It's tomorrow night!! Don't forget...

Prof. Larsen in Russian Studies has asked me to tell people about this talk, and since it relates to Media Studies, I figured that the blog would be a good place to start...

CHARLIE CHAPLIN AND THE SOVIETS

A presentation by Yuri Tsivian (William Colvin Professor in the Humanities, University of Chicago)

Tuesday, September 26, 4:15 pm, Hahn 108

This lecture will address the reception of Charlie Chaplin as image and idea by Soviet artists and filmmakers in the 1920s; Soviet perceptions of Chaplin as a "Taylorist" performer; and Soviet attributions of at least one film to Chaplin that Chaplin never made. This is the first in a series on "Borrowed Icons: Pop Culture and Cultural Politics in Russia, Europe, and the United States."
