Mom

Disney!

On the topic of children’s media, I still have never really had a good discussion on why there are no mothers in Disney movies and why the mother figures that do exist in these movies either die or are actually completely evil as in Snow White and Cinderella. When I think about it, I’m pretty sure the only kind, loving mother that does not get killed off before the end of the first half of a Disney movie is the dog in 101 Dalmatians, but hey, she’s a bitch so that really isn’t much better… :). This phenomenon is pretty weird when you think about it. The likelihood that ALL the mothers would not exist or only exist in a negative capacity solely by coincidence seems very slim.

My mom is cooler than your mom.

Tonight I called my mom and dad up for our usual Sunday Night Chat where they ask me about classes and belie their golf scores. I was in the middle of "First Person" and realized what a neat resource my mom was to talk about such things. While she doesn't care about postmodern blahdeeblah, she adds an interesting perspective from the creative side of narratives.

My mom used to write for television, most noteably for MATLOCK. She also wrote for WONDERWOMAN, HAWAII Five-O, and THE NEW TWILIGHT ZONE. MOM IS COOL. Now she writes for Nancy Drew computer games at a small, Bellevue-based company, "HerInteractive". I asked her what she thought about the switch from TV to computer, and also a few other things I thought pertained to the reading.
