Methods of fan appropriation: Vidding as transformative work
From MediaStudies
Presented by Alice Stevens of the Digital/Electronic track on Wednesday, September 17th.
My session will be made up of three components: An introduction to appropriation as it applies to fan culture and vidding specifically, a screening of select vids which I will introduce and discuss afterward, and a demonstration of how to make fanvids (including some of the editing techniques I use).
During my session I will seek to answer the following questions, with participation from attendees:
- What is appropriation and what does "transformative work" mean?
- What is vidding?
- Why do people vid? Why do people watch vids?
- What are vids trying to say or accomplish?
- How do people vid? What techniques do vidders use to make interesting and successful vids?
For those interested, my own vids can be seen at imeem.
