Michael Parenti on Methods in Media Manipulation

Hey Guys, So I guess I have been replaced by the Michael Parenti lecture, Either way, I think it's important to assign a little bit of work, just in case you can't make it to that lecture. For the first part of your assignment please watch the Zeitgeist Movie. You can find it at www.zeitgeistmovie.org. It is about 2 hours long but I promise you this movie will really get you psyched for the class discussion. While the title of the lesson is political documentary and manipulation through editing, this film can be a basis of discussion for both categories. The Zeitgeist film contains criticism of Christianity, 9/11, and the American government.

Some questions to consider: 1) What is the distinction between a political documentary and a conspiracy activist film? 2) What are the characteristics of modern day propaganda? 3) In seeing a film like this, what is the first thought that comes to mind, either with content or actual production of the piece. 4) After seeing this film, were you inspired to do your own research or were you convinced of the ideas conveyed in the film?

Homework: Add at least one initial reaction comment to the discussion section of this page before lecture!

I will add a reading as soon as I can, Friday night at the latest, but I figure a 2 hour movie should tide you all over for the time being. Enjoy! I promise you will, whether or not you agree with what the film has to say.
