Discussion
Monday, Sept 15th the Narrative group will meet to discuss the meaning of Narrative film making. Come prepared to discuss:
- What do you define as narrative vs. non narrative?
- How has narrative/non narrative film making changed since films have been made, but also since we have been alive?
- How is narrative film making relating to your project and what would be an example of this that you might be drawing from/has inspired you in some way?
I might suggest that you all plan to screen some film clips, or better yet, ask partcipants to bring them. Alex J.
Assignment
Bring a clip that has inspired your thinking towards or against narrative film. Also below in Forum, write a brief intro to what you might bring or how you are thinking about Narrative films prior to the meeting.
Forum
William Colling: I am interested in identifying and discussing the advantages and disadvantages of the narrative film compared to other forms of the narrative (Television, Radio, Novels, ect). I will screen the climax of "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly."
Taj Ruler: I'd like to talk about the arch of the characters in a narrative film. Especially how it's crucial in a short narrative. Other people's input in this would be very helpful towards my own project. I'll show an online short called, Dough: The Musical.
Mara Freedman: My love of movies came from the old musicals and classics I would see on TV. This is probably why I love romantic comedies so much. As I am in the process of writing a romantic comedy separate from the one my project is about, I am having a difficult time as I approach the ending. I want to show a clip from one of my all time favorites, Breakfast at Tiffany's." I will show the last few minutes to discuss the narrative transitions that have been made in moviemaking since this and many others were made - the endings end rather abruptly and don't wrap things up for you. Is this a good or bad thing? Is a return to this kind of ending something that might make movies better?
Caleb Light-Wills: Recently, my interest in Narrative film has centered on how editing is used to create the story. I will be screening a short segment from The Rules of Attraction (2002), which aptly demonstrates how a montage sequence can be used to further a narrative in the span of only a few minutes.
Maggi Massad: I am interested in narrative style and narrative elements in animated title sequences. I will be showing two title sequences that I find particularly interesting and inspiring. They are the title sequences from Catch Me if you Can and Casino Royale. I would like to discuss the narrative content in these title sequences and others.
Justin Weitzel: I am interested in the innovation of complex narratives in American television. I will be showing a clip from the cancelled television series, Arrested Development. No television show has ever inspired me like Arrested Development has.
