Overview

This will be a technical workshop connecting aspects of cinematographic theory to actual camera technique. We will discuss the 5 C's of Cinematography, familiarize ourselves with Panasonic HVX-200A and Canon XL-2 cameras and explain the practical importance of the technical terms listed below. Finally, we will screen a number of clips exemplifying some truly brilliant cinematography and deconstruct each in order to gain a better understanding of their aesthetic value and technical execution.

There will also be a brief tutorial on how to get good sound quality out of your film as well. We will discuss what to do about your sound while in production and then in post-production. How much sound is actually used while shooting as opposed to post.

List of Terms

Prepare for the Session

  1. Read the aforementioned list of terms and definitions.
  2. Pick any contemporary film, made within the last ten years. Watch the film in its entirety paying close attention to the cinematography and sound. Pick what you think is the best shot in the film, whether that be the most inspiring, emotionally evocative, aesthetically pleasing, or all of the above. Think about why the shot creates this response. Come to class ready to discuss your chosen shot. Try to find it on YouTube and if possible add a link to the Wiki under the links section.
