Alex: thought this would be of interest to some of you: Dear Colleague,

I am writing to invite you to attend the first annual “Debating4Democracy on the Road” workshop at Occidental College from 10 am to 4:30 pm on October 24, 2008. Pitzer is a co-sponsor of this Project Pericles endeavor and hopes to bring a number of students and faculty to this important event.

D4D on the Road is a one-day training program that will be held at 11 college and university campuses around the country this fall. The training program is designed to provide novice and seasoned political activists with the tools and tactics they will need to persuade lawmakers and candidates to "see things your way". Detailed sessions teach you how to actively participate in civic engagement during this important election season!

The workshop will be led by Soapbox Consulting. Soapbox Consulting, headed by Christopher Kush, the author of The One-Hour Activist, is a leading provider of training seminars, workshops, and lobby days for many national associations including the American Cancer Society, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Human Rights Campaign, National Association of Elementary School Principals, National Council of Schools and Programs in Professional Psychology, and others. Each workshop attendee will receive a copy of The One-Hour Activist, which provides advice from elected officials, professional organizers, lobbyists, and journalists on political advocacy.

During the workshop, we will screen the nonpartisan documentary film “18-in-'08” directed by 19 year-old David Burstein, a sophomore at Haverford College. The 30 minute film is targeted at 17-24 year olds, many of whom will be voting for the first time in the 2008 presidential election.

The workshop is co-sponsored by Project Pericles and the Spencer Foundation and will be co-hosted by a number of student groups, student government, and academic departments. A continental breakfast and lunch will be served.

We have 15 spots available for this workshop and will provide transportation. A bus will drive Pitzer students and faculty to and from this workshop (departing Pitzer service road at 8:00am and leaving from Occidental at 4:30pm). Due to space limitations, all people interested in attending the workshop will need to let me know and also register directly for this event at http://elond4d.eventbrite.com/. We hope that you and your students will be able to join us at this event. If you’d like to attend, please let us know by October 15th; spots will be given to folks on a first-come, first-serve basis.

If you have any questions, then please contact me at tessa_hicks@pitzer.edu or (909) 607- 3061.

Sincerely,

T e s s a
