Last Friday I went to the Knowledge Management symposium. It was very good. I gained new knowledge and refreshed my knowledge from several speakers. Agi and Shabnam did a good job when they gave a presentation on Changing Workforce & Knowledge Management. I also went to the Symposium - Page, Screen, and Pixel: Media in Transition last Saturday. I missed the first talk but I did like the second speaker, Bob Stein, who spoke on The Evolution of Reading and Writing in the Networked Era. I gained insight and ideas from his talk. He is the director of the Institute for the Future of the Book. He described the concept of how a book will change in the future and how we would collaborate in the cyberworld. We can be both authors and readers at the same time. The content may not be the most important thing; the community between writers and readers will be. The book can speak for itself by collaboration among readers and authors. Using the concept of Web 2.0, the readers can become the writers and change the way we write and read the book. I liked a plugin in WordPress that he showed, CommentPress. It makes a discussion among readers and authors much easier.
Jason Mittell talked about TV in the digital age. I liked it when he showed a picture from TV series, Lost, that people could upload on the Internet a few minutes after it was broadcast. With collaboration, people who were watching could reveal the secret and detail behind that picture within a short time. This shows the power of the Internet and group collaboration. It can change the way people exchange their ideas and participate. The last speaker, Siva, talked about The Googlization of Everything. This topic is very interesting but he talked very fast. He claimed that Google is magic. With a white screen and a text box, we can search anything in the world. How amazing it is!!! When other business heard that Google will enter in their markets, they feel scare of this name. It seems like Google is a god. I liked when he said Google has bias though. For example, the first things on the search results may not be the best information but rather the information that the business have paid to put on the top of the list. Motto from this story is that business is business.
