Women and Children First: Gender and the Settling of the Electronic Frontier

Women and Children First: Gender and the Settling of the Electronic Frontier
By Laura Miller

“The net, on the other hand, occupies precisely no physical space. … Unlike land, the Net was created by its pioneers.” First, Miller defined what exactly is Frontier in terms of the net. Of course, this would have to be adjusted as the term redefined in terms of computer age. Therefore, Frontier is the sharing of information, gathering of people from all walks of life. Why then women and children first? As people in the net grow in usage and functions, it allows people of all ages to gather and meet at certain net group. These online-meeting creates an issue of limit for children especially as to whom they can talk to or deal with. The children are vulnerable, naïve, and curious. If they are not protected they can be easily be the prey of the predators. The women on the other hand, according to Miller, are as often as an inappropriate target on the net as children does. In the chat room for example one may find certain atmosphere that is full of certain language. There for you see that there is a monitor of “bot” or “referee” just incase someone type in an inappropriate language. This occurrence is no coincidental according to Miller since such a behavior is hostile toward woman, men, and children alike.
