net neutrality

Another thought

Your post got me thinking about other reasons why net-neutrality may warrant a little more thought. So I did a little reading up...
This viewpoint argues that because of the rate that the internet is growing at, improvements are going to need to be made very soon, because otherwise there will be a lot of traffic due to the increased demand.

However, if the government sides in favor of net neutrality then telecommunications companies stand to gain little or no increased revenue despite the increased demand for the use of the internet. So, it's just not to their advantage to try to make the (very very expensive) upgrades to the infrastructure that allows us to connect to the wonderful world wide web. (Not as well as they could anyway)

Is Net Neutrality truly at stake?

Net Neutrality is something I haven't worried about lately. I was, all of a sudden, wondering why this is after our last class. I've decided that, either I'm much less informed than I should be, or that the political economy of the internet is really not at stake as much as our in class video may have led us to believe.

It really is in the interest of many large corporations (maybe minus some ISPs) to facilitate user expression through weblogs, video logs, independent websites and everything else user generated. For companies that make large revenues off of online advertising, such as google, Yahoo and even Microsoft, user generated content that can have advertisements attached are an incredibly large source of revenue.

Net Neutrality: California takes a stand

I was very motivated (and scared) by the video clip on net neutrality last class period. I have sent that link to many of my friends and family members, because I think it is a very important issue that needs to address now. I was pleased to read California reps are making this position heard . . .

I am also curious to see the future of such software programs like BitTorrent, that have been accused of being not exactly net neutral.

Also, (I’m sure it was one of you guys so) way to go on putting up a flyer on net neutrality on campus!! See you at your event.
