Midterm Proposal

For my midterm project I would like to examine how iTunes media and the iTunes interface is paving its own path of how new media should behave and compare it to some other more traditional new media services such as netflix and rhapsody. First, the limited assortment yet high appeal of movies on the music store seem to be boosting the sales of the blockbuster type movie instead of creating a long tail effect like netflix does. Also, the highly publicized "top ten" list on iTunes further draw people to purchase more mainstream music and movie titles. The large banners present on the music store's pages further advertise the newest releases from the largest movie and music studios. ITunes does have some features such as the "recommended for you" section that could create a long tail effect yet the iTunes library selection is much more limited than a site like Rhapsody. Finally, I would like to examine how iTunes media behaves compared to other movie and music services and how the easy and integrated iTunes interface make it a the preferred new media outlet.

I plan on making my project a website where there will be an index page that will link to other pages that contain different sections of my presentation. I also will have some clickable words through my paper that will link to online examples such as the iTunes website. I would also like to offer my readers with some screenshots to demonstrate the ease of the iTunes interface and how the more mainstream media is the most highly accessible on the music store.

True -- though the iTunes store itself began this way, with a relatively small selection, as Apple had only signed deals with a couple of labels; gradually, as more labels came on board, the selection grew. I suspect the film rentals will operate in much the same way.

I'll look forward to seeing where this takes you. I take it you'll be using Anderson in your analysis; are there other class texts that might be of use? Manovich, perhaps?
