Television Storytelling

I found Jason Mittel's lecture extremely interesting. He spoke a lot about interplay between episodes and how the story weaves together. The most fascinating thing about television is that every episode is a puzzle piece that puts together the whole series/season.

"television is just another appliance. It's a toaster with pictures." I've always thought that an 'appliance' is something that's used around the house and has a certain function. For example, the toaster toasts bread. I think a TV is an 'electronic' instead of an 'actually helpful appliance.' However, a TV's function is entertaining.

The most important thing he mentioned was that 'it's not the product, but the process.' People watch television and never want to miss an episode for that very reason. No one would want to buy a series and watch just the ending. It's a waste of money, and a waste of film. The main idea of show's is to watch every episode and link all of them together. Otherwise, it's like putting together a puzzle with missing pieces.
