In doing my research, it has been really interesting in remembering how things have changed on the social networking site habbo. If I remember correctly, at the beginning of the process of making a habbo, you were required to choose a name and a sex. After choosing, sex could not be changed. Race was variable using different color selections, avoiding specified race designations. One key feature that has since been added is the randomize button for appearances. This randomization includes randomizing race AND sex. While it may not seem like a big addition, the randomize button helps make the sex and race differences shown by habbos more trivial, as it breaks down the issue of race and sex selection closer to the same level that the selection of clothing is on. Habbo has been called progressive but I have also found youtube videos from Anonymous that showed protests against racists moderators within the habbo system. In the beauty contests within habbo, most rooms state that race cannot be a factor in deciding. However, the number of winners of such contests that can be considered closer to non-white is very very small. It seems as though the winners of such contests also generally adhere to a small set of clothing and look options. While habbo body types are generally uniform, it seems that the beauty ideals have taken on a new form in Habbo.
It seems that habbo still has a long way to go until it catches up with the cultural level displayed in real life.
The Habbo way
