Hey guys, here is my adventure game, for anyone who is interested.
To play the game, you will need to download Inform, which you can get here:
http://www.inform-fiction.org/I7/Download.html
download the right version of inform, unzip the attached file, then open the file with inform. To play the game, hit "go" in the top left. I recommend resizing the left window so that you can't see it. The rest of the instructions are within the game. Let me know what you think.
Enjoy!
After reading and presenting on Convergence Culture, I got to thinking about the future of the gaming industry. Jenkins stresses that world creation is the new important step in creating a movie/game/etc. but he also points out that the big companies and artistic rights owners have drawn in the reigns to keep their intellectual property closer at hand. Most of the time this has to do with profit… companies/creators don’t want other people to profit from their ideas. The obvious example of this is the demise of the Harry Potter Encyclopedia.
Henry Jenkins’s makes the claim that “(w)ithin convergence culture everyone’s a participant- although participants may have different degrees of status and influence†(132). The forum members at YoYo Games are all creators, yet just as Jenkins’s claims, even a person who creates a game by his or herself may not be able to claim full credit for the game. Often the part that is borrowed from somewhere is the story and characters from mainstream video games. Examples of this would be from such classic games like The Legend of Zelda, Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario Bros.
