Midterm Proposal: Political News

For my midterm project I want to analyze the site, www.drudgereport.com, a political web site that uses hyperlinks to connect a visitor to large amounts of information from a single page format. Drudge seeks to deliver a general sense of current news without much commentary and using a series of intriguingly titled links to connect one to a more substantive site. The site does not rely solely on its own reporting nor insight, instead using the page as a jumping off point to a multitude of dedicated reporting sites.

For my midterm project I would like to analyze Wikipedia. Even if you believe that it is not a reliable source, the fact remains that Wikipedia has had an enormous impact on the world. Wikipedia is an instant way to access any information that you could possibly be looking for. It is an indexed internet. The social implications and impacts of Wikipedia are also very widespread. There have been controversies regarding information posted on individual's pages as well as countless arguments about whether or not Wikipedia is a credible information source.

Midterm Proposal

For my midterm project, I'd like to analyze the structure of wikipedia. Both Nelson and Bush had ideas about software with a structure like that of Wikipedia, and I would examine how Wikipedia both approaches their respective visions, yet is also different from each. Furthermore, I would examine why Wikipedia might be separate from the supposably optimal models that these scientists foresaw. Could Wikipedia be improved along the lines they suggest? Or, is the structure of Wikipedia actually more practical than what they wrote about?

For my midterm project, I want to discuss the website "Match.com". First of all, I would like to explore the appeal that Match.com and other dating websites has, because I feel that these websites go along with the same overall "instant satisfaction" aspect of the internet today, and it really fascinates me that this idea of instant gratifictation from the internet would transcend into the dating/relationships aspect of humanity, so all we have to do is sign up for a website, post a few well selected pictures of ourselves, pay a monthly fee, and this will lead us to love.

In the first few readings we did in this class, we explored the potential of social networking websites. Most of us might associate social networking websites to be all about meeting and interacting with people through the internet, I would like to explore when actions on the internet as led to actions off the internet. For those of you who sometimes watch Comedy Central early in the morning might recognize the name the Upright Citizens Brigade, which besides being a short lived television series is also the name of an improvisational group that was founded by Charlie Todd. Mr.

For my mid-term project, I would like to write about myspace and the American youth. In the beginning, myspace was for peple of ages 16 and older. The regulations later changed to fourteen and older, and the rules haven't changed since. I also want to write about how children have gotten so involved in the internet, that they use myspace for attention. I will use Danah Boyd's essay "Why Youth (Heart) Social Network Sites: The Role of Networked Publics in Teenage Social Life" as a source.

For my midterm project, I will be looking at the direct relationship between today’s current political landscape and the internet, specifically the current presidential primaries. Personally, I find it fascinating just how much our politics and especially the act of running for political office have changed. For instance, it was only a few years ago that candidates were required to fly from state to state on a whirlwind trip, making sure they got in touch with every small town in America, which was taxing enough.
