Us and Them

DeLillo has already brought in the capitalized Us and Them that brings to mind the capitalized words of GR....."And what is the connection between Us and Them, how many bundled links do we find in the neural labyrinth? It's not enough to hate your enemy. You have to understand how the two of you bring each other to deep completion" Us vs Them is necessary for any type of war, including the Cold War: without this idea, how can you hate? And past that, DeLillo says that you need 2 separate entities so that you can decide your place in the world. The power struggle of the Cold War can be seen in terms of two superpowers with differing ideas of how they each brought the other to 'deep completion'. Each wanted to be the dominant force, and the C.W. was 'fought' to establish the dominancy of one or the other, thereby figuring out how they fit together in the world. DeLillo could almost be saying that the C.W. was necessary to establish the pecking order in the world: nothing else could have done the job.

I also noticed the Us and Them, and what was interesting to me was the paragraph immediately following "You have to understand how the two of you bring each other to deep completion."
"The old dead fucking the new. The dead raising coffins from the earth. The hillside dead tolling the old rugged bells that clang for the sins of the world."

Delillo connects the notions of Us and Them with "The Triumph of Death." Death, or at least the sinful state of the world, of old dead fucking the newly dead-- a state where everybody is essentially dead-- could be the "deep completion" enemies bring each other to.

Also, the idea that WWII is still screwing the new generation into the Cold War....
