Heroes

I don't know if anyone here has ever watched Heroes, the television show, but whoever was in charge of the script for that show apparently loves Snow Crash. There's the fact that they also named their protagonist Hiro (though I was prepared to write that off as a coincidence, because it is still a play on words). And then I came across Odessa Texas (which is where most of the action is centered in the first season). No way is that a coincidence, right?

I caught the residual pun on Hiro's name, but I didn't notice the Odessa thing. Clever little business, there. Not to mention other similarities that are more easily chalked up to coincidence, such as the fact that both feature the threat of nuclear explosions in a major city (in Snow Crash's case, Raven's motorcycle bomb in LA, versus the exploding man in Heroes). Funny thing, 'cause I was thinking about Heroes as one of the TV shows today that's closer to the cyberpunk legacy.

Snow Crash is a more famous book than I realized, though. After all, it's credited with popularizing the term "avatars" - and that's one that's everywhere these days.

I also thought of the tv show Heroes! Both Hiros have swords. Also, in Snow Crash, I thought Hiro's ability to travel between the real world and the Metaverse might have translated into the tv show character's ability to travel across time and space.
