I was talking to my roommate about our scifi class and this obsession with information (like those tapes from Cyteen) and the Metaverse from Snow Crash, and she brought up this anime movie called "Ghost in the Shell."
Here's a clip from youtube. http://youtube.com/watch?v=txXeLt1ECwI&feature=related
Has anyone else ever seen this?
Yeah, It's a really great anime. It goes over questions of being able to define an individual's soul, or Ghost as it is referred to in the movie, when almost everyone is at least partially cybertronic. Most people have artificial limbs or eyes and such, and an electronic braincase that allows them to access an advanced communications network, but still supposedly retain their humanity through their feelings of having a Ghost, and then there are entirely mechanical humanoid robots that just serve whatever purpose they were designed to do. The movie brings into question these boundaries through the main character, Motoko Kusanagi, who is entirely cybernetic, but presumably once was just like any other biological human, contrasted against a robot that I forget the name of, but has an AI so advanced it begins to question its own right to life and potential to have a Ghost, and if it is really fair or even possible to create this distinctions. I haven't watched it in a long time so I can't get further in depth as to the whole argument of the movie, but if you've got time, I'd say watch it because it's pretty cool. I do remember it being a bit confusing and heavy, though this may have been a result of watching it with subtitles on a japanese audio track, but there is also a TV anime series that follows the same themes, but is presented a bit slower and with more focus on entertainment along with the philosophy, called Ghost in the Shell SAC (Stand Alone Complex).
Oh yeah, and the music is all done by Yoko Kanno, and is amazing to listen to and even study with.
