Eshu

I was thinking about how Hopkinson's dialect critiques the normal technology-centric language of science fiction books, and the name "Eshu" came to mind. Looking it up on Wikipedia reveals some cool things (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eshu):

He is a mythological character from "Yoruba mythology and related New World traditions" who protects travelers -- definitely makes sense as a choice of terminology for a 'smart house' that can help you out even when you're on the road. At the same time, Eshu was all about teaching people lessons, so maybe it makes sense that human nature (wanting to have privacy to do more-sneaky things) forces Antonio to try and get away from Eshu's all-knowing/all-seeing watch.

Douen comes from Afro-Carribean mythology, too (Yoruba = west Africa), as part of Trinidadian mythology they were the forest-dwelling spirits of lost (unbaptized?) children (link)
