After the death of my friend and colleague, David Wallace, I published an essay on Planned Obsolescence that attempted to express the enormity of the loss that I felt, both personally and professionally. When I was later asked by the editors of the journal Modernism/Modernity to write a brief essay for their January 2009 “In Memoriam” section, I submitted a revised version of that essay.
