In `Gramsci's Relevance for the Study of Race and Ethnicity` Stuart Hall lays out his interpretation of Gramsci's writings, then uses Gramsci's theorizations to analyize how we think about race and racism.

Domination vs. Leadership

Domination and coercion can be used to hold power, but the effective use of coercion depends on using it consistently and continually. On the other hand, “leadership” combines coercive aspects with the attempt to make itself popular and win consent in cultural, moral, ethical, and intellectual spheres as well as administrative and economic. For Gramsci, there is no pure case of coercion or consent, only different combinations of the two.
