False consciousness

From MarxWiki

The traditional Marxist notion of false consciousness describes the submission of the proletariat to the dominant ideology (perpetuated by the culture industry), thus continuing to live blindly within an ideology that is counter to their own class interests. (Horkheimer and Adorno)

Some Marxists believed that through education, the proletariat would realize its true interests and see through the illusion of the dominant ideology.

More contemporary cultural theorists have left the notion of “false consciousness” behind, opting instead for the notion of consent under hegemonic rule.
