Chantal Mouffe is a professor of Political Theory at the Centre for the Study of Democracy at the University of Westminster in London. Mouffe’s previous works include The Dimensions of Radical Democracy, The Return of the Political and The Democratic Paradox.

To summarize his basic argument, Mouffe believes to adequately understand ideology, one must examine Gramsci because he rearticulates hegemony, separating class and ideology so they so not necessarily correspond rather than assuming the dominant group is forcing ideology on a subordinate group. The dominant, he explains, must consider the needs of the subordinate group that are negotiated. Ideology isn't all about false consciousness, but can be considered `fierce negotiations.` In this way, Mouffe presents the idea of overdetermination.
