Pastiche

A style of plagiarizing, quoting, and borrowing from previous styles with no reference to history or a sense of rules. Pastiche is a technique often used in postmodern art. It is, most simply, something that references or imitates something else. This type of stylistic imitation can be used in anything from painting to writing to music, although it is traditionally a literary term.

Popular culture is full of pastiche (For example, the `Beyond the Sea` episode of `The X-Files,` which obviously references `Silence of the Lambs`)-- this fits in with the postmodern idea that nothing is new; everything has been done before. Pastiche is usually a tongue-in-cheek but respectful imitation, as opposed to parody, which is far less respectful.
