Textual Poachers
From MarxWiki
One of Henry Jenkins first works, published in 1992, Textual Poachers: Television Fans & Participatory Culture examines television fandoms in an attempt to both legitimize them and explore the subcultures they create. Calling upon the work of Michel de Certeau, Roland Barthes, Janice Radway, and others, Jenkins explores the basis of fandom, as well as the fandom community, specifically referring to shows such as `Star Trek,` `Blake's 7,` `Alien Nation,` `Beauty and the Beast,` and `Twin Peaks.` Jenkins also explores the way that video taping and online chatting is reshaping the fan community. An admitted insider into fan culture, Jenkins offers an interesting analysis of the interactions between fan and show, fan and network, fandom and the media, and fans and fandom community.
Concepts explored in this book: textual poaching, nomadic readers, appropriation, rereading, authorial intent.
