Use-value

The practical function of the commodity. Marx writes in Capital that the use-value "has no existence apart from that commodity." The use-value of the commodity becomes a reality only by use or consumption. The exchange-value of a commodity is independent from its use-value. A commodity only has a use-value because human labor is embodied in it.
